32.2 miles, 4921’/5630′ gain/loss
I was awake at 6am, and out by 6:30am. I took a 3-mi road alternate first thing in the morning in order to have access to water 5-6 miles sooner and I saw 4 logging trucks. They were all respectful, slowing down to pass by me, rather than coating me in dust as they sped past.
I made it to the WY/CO border, and nearly bumped into an oblivious deer that didn’t view humans as dangerous or of interest. There was amazing trail magic (2 grizzly-proof coolers full of Dr Pepper and Starbucks coffee drinks along with various snacks, as well as 2 chairs) just 6mi beyond the WY/CO border. I was chased by dark menacing clouds and thunder rumbles in the early afternoon, with spitting rain off and on for hours. The bad weather threat was exhausting and had me extremely anxious, since the storm winds and rain were cold.
I missed the road detour around a bridge being out and ended up jumping over a creek and bushwhacking in very tight prickers and vaulting over a ton of downed trees. Towards the evening, I finally had enough cell service for a phone conversation, which was very welcome. I pushed until sundown and got myself set up at the bottom of tomorrow’s big climb. I set up camp at the North Lake TH by 7:45pm and was asleep by 9pm after filtering water.
