Start: Mt Sunapee Resort
End: Moose Lookout Shelter
Miles: 7.4
Elevation gain: 2234′
GaiaGPS route
I drove the two hours to the Mt Sunapee Resort, arriving around 7:15pm after eating a gas station dinner (since all the fast food places had lines 15+ minutes long). I prepped my gear, used an open bathroom, and hit the trail. I climbed the 2.1 miles to the summit of Sunapee, though after the Adirondacks, it was such smooth and easy elevation gain by contrast.
I then struck out to consume the remaining 5.3 miles to the shelter as quickly as possible. The sun went down around 8:30 and it was dark in the woods by 9, requiring headlamp usage. I arrived to the water source for the shelter at 10:15, refilled my water, and then headed up the hill to the shelter. I’ve set up, and spread out in the 6 person shelter I have to myself. It’s late and fairly far from the water source or privy, so I’m hopeful that the bugs will be mild tonight. And tomorrow, I’ll only have double the elevation gain of today, stretched over 25 miles. I think that should be fine! Additionally, I’m looking forward to a nice on-trail town snack around mile 10.5. 😊
