Start/End: Sherburne Pass/Long Trail Trailhead
Miles: 5.63
Elevation gain: 2080′
I drove to the trailhead across the street from the Inn at Long Trail, where I met a friend. We suited up, put on spikes, and then headed up the trail. The beginning mile was very well packed, though closer to the summit, there were sections with a less firm surface. The few places that had softer, deeper snow already were full of postholes from backcountry skiers, so I didn’t feel bad for leaving my snowshoes at the car.
It was a quick and direct hike to the summit, passing by Pico Camp and then crossing the ski trails a few times before emerging by the chairlift and cutting up to the summit behind the ski patrol warming hut. Overall, a chilly but beautifully blue day!
