Start: beyond the last windchill
End: Highway 58/Cameron Canyon Rd (Mojave)
Elevation gain/loss: 1401/3435
Mileage: 12.1
I was awake at 4:55 this morning, and on trail by 5:30am. It was a bit windy overnight, but I picked a flat, sheltered spot to cowboy camp so it wasn’t too bad, though my legs got cold by 3-4am. I had 2.5L of water left and only drank 1L in the cool of the morning before I got to the highway. There’s a high wind warning in effect until tomorrow morning, and the windchill has been substantial, remarkably so. It’s mid-60s and feels like the low 50s in the shade.
At the top of the last peak, I called Kern Transit and requested the 11am stop at the highway crossing, since the hitch into Mojave and Tehachapi tends to be very challenging from here (highway overpass, very quiet exit). I arrived at the highway by 9:45am, so I’ve been relaxing until the bus comes. I can’t imagine the motel would let me check in this early anyway! Some kind soul left a few small snacks and so I have something to keep me company while I wait.
I’ll be resupplying for another 3.5 days in town, and heading out on the 6am Kern bus in the morning. I’m really looking forward to a shower, laundry, and a warm bed.
