Start/End: Crawford Notch
Miles: 9.38
Elevation Gain/Loss: 4094′
Peaks: Tom, Willey, Field, Avalon
I took off from Crawford Notch in the falling daylight. As I hiked uphill, I realized I had a few too many layers on but didnt’ stop to remove one or two. This meant I got damp from my sweat and this made it challenging to keep my core body temperature stable. I put on my rain shell and that helped break the wind and stop evaporation. Between Field and Willey, the wind blew through the saddle very quickly. With snow falling and winds whipping by at 50 MPH on the ridge, it was a cold night hike. I was happy to get lower and more sheltered, but I also enjoyed the addition of snow to smooth out the descent. There isn’t quite enough to fully cover the rocks, but it’s getting there!
