With a pristine weather forecast, I decided to go for a much bigger hike than I had intended. The Presi was looking perfect – record-breaking lows, high but decreasing winds, and a clearing pattern. I linked up with my friend Stephanie to get a ride around to Appalachia after dropping my car at Crawford Notch. It was great to chat with her before starting a big day.
The cool temperatures and clear skies kept me moving quickly upward. I set some personal bests on a number of different sections, joyful to just be out in such wonderful weather. I borrowed a dime from Madison Spring Hut to tighten one of my pole closures, and that worked great.
Despite visits to all 3 huts for water and snack breaks, I kept my stopped time under an hour, balancing speed and enjoyment. I made it back to my car just before full dark, stubbornly avoiding pulling out my headlamp.
