Start: campsite 1.2mi south of Sonora Pass
End: campsite by the creek in Stubblefield Canyon
Miles: 36.0
Elevation gain/loss: 4865’/7077′
I was awake at 5:30 and on trail by 6am. Early on, I met Socks and Matador, two NOBO section hikers heading from TM to Truckee. I saw at least another 2 dozen hikers, mostly folks section hiking north.
I hiked 20 miles by 2pm, though the rocks and steep climbs increased in the afternoon. I climbed over Dorothy Lake Pass. I pushed an extra handful of miles, not setting up camp until 8:15pm. The mosquitoes mostly went away as soon as the sun set, so I had a fairly pleasant time eating some food and filtering up some water. Smoke wasn’t present today, and it sounds like the Oak fire is slowly becoming more contained.
I pushed so far the last few days that I only have 37 miles left to Tuolumne Meadows, though it’s 7000+ gain, so it’s possible I could get there tomorrow evening, though we’ll see how things progress. But given that the latest bus leaves at 6:50pm and there’s no camping allowed at or within 4 miles of Tuolumne Meadows, I don’t think it’ll happen. But I will be able to have a leisurely two days, arriving well before the 4:20pm bus on Friday and able to partake of all that TM has to offer.
