I was up at dawn at 5:30, and on trail by 6am. The air quality was good today; a little rain overnight with winds shifting direction did good things for the smoke and the fire. Today had a lot of steep climbing (15-20% grade), and the higher altitude has been exhausting me. It also rained off and on for an hour in the morning, which meant I needed to dig out my pack cover and rain jacket. I didn’t even make 10 miles by 10am, though I arrived at my intended campsite around 3-4pm and kept moving forward. It rained again in the afternoon, accompanied by some thunder but no lightening.
I met Farmore, an older woman who is section hiking, and tried to help her troubleshoot her frozen Garmin. We didn’t have any luck, but it was a good chat. Later in the day, I met Downdog and Hawkeye, both NOBO thruhikers who left Campo in mid May. I also met Atlas, a JMT hiker turned PCT hiker.
I passed over Sonora Pass (Kennedy Meadows North is 8mi down the road), filtering water for a 10-mile carry, and then hiked another few miles before setting up camp at 8pm.
