Miles: 11.23
Start/End: Ferncroft TH
Elevation gain/loss: 4180′
Peaks: Whiteface, Passaconaway
After running the Sunapee Scramble in southern NH, I decided to take advantage of my proximity and head up to the Whites for a quick adventure. I drove up to Ferncroft in the rain, though it mostly stopped by the time I arrived at the trailhead. I packed up and headed out, with perhaps another 3 cars in the parking lot. I went up towards Whiteface via Blueberry Ledge trail and partway up, it began raining lightly. By the time I hit the summit, it was snowing in big thick flakes. There was a monorail of snow along the ridge and I barebooted for a while before I put on my spikes for traction. I made good time despite the ~3″ of fresh falling snow, summited Passaconaway, and then headed down. Within 0.3-0.4 miles of descent, the snow was gone. Some areas were a bit soggy and water-logged, but nothing too bad. I made quick time back to my car, arriving before sunset.
