Miles: 9.25
Start/End: York Pond East TH
Elevation gain/loss: 3127′
Peaks: Cabot
After a full day yesterday and very high winds (120 MPH on Washington) and rain forecast for the day, I decided to go with a great bad-weather hike. I drove out to York Pond trailhead in the rain. When I arrived at the trailhead, there was one other car in the lot. I packed up and then headed down Bunnell Notch Trail after a quick chat with another hiker who’d just arrived and was clearly looking for the trail that goes to the Horn and the Bulge. The trail was remarkably dry/not soggy given the season, and I enjoyed my time hiking up to the summit. I hit snow around 3500′ and put on spikes for the traction; the wind was howling around the summit and the cabin, with clouds whipping by through the clearing. Like Whiteface and Passaconaway, the precipitation from the day before had been snow and ice rather than rain. It was a damp but relaxed day, with little active rain fall during my hike, and I was very glad for my decision to stick relatively low and below treeline.
