End: Lincoln Woods
Miles: 11.7
Elevation gain/loss: 2665’/3682′
We were up early, at 5am, and out on trail by 6:15am. We stopped to filter a bit of water and then headed up the trail. We made it to the base of the herdpath up to Owl’s Head around 9:15am and headed up. We quickly hit the slide, and Little Engine struggled with his vertigo and fear of heights. We slowly but surely made our way to the summit, arriving around 11am. We took a short break and then headed back down; at the Brutus bushwhack, I sent him down that herdpath, so he could avoid the slide on the way back down. However, since our packs were at the base of the slide and 0.3 miles from the end of the Brutus bushwhack, I went back down the slide to pick up both of our packs and then hike to meet him. From there, it was smooth and mostly flat sailing. We did take the Black Pond bushwhack to avoid a number of creek crossings and cut off a mile of trail. We made it back to Lincoln Woods parking lot by 4pm, after dodging almost a hundred people all congregating around the LW bridge and the east branch of the Pemi river. We drove 2 minutes down the road and went for a refreshing swim on a quieter section of river, and then got take-out Thai food in Lincoln before driving home.
