Start/End: Hancock viewing area
Miles: 9.22
Elevation Gain/Loss: 3091′
Peaks: Hancock, South Hancock
I started out from the trailhead close to sunset; within the first 2 miles, I crossed paths with 4 people heading back. They questioned me and expressed disbelief that I was heading to the summits. I smiled, thanked them for their concern, and continued on my way.
The trail was a bit icy, and I quickly added my microspikes to my Goretex shoes. With my spikes, I was able to keep a quick pace for everything but the most steep sections. The climb up to Hancock felt as long as usual in the dark, but the hike between peaks was lovely, all lit by moonlight. The ice coming down South Hancock was treacherous and had me wiping out a few times. I was glad to get back to flatter ground. I made my way back to my car, avoiding the slick rocks on the larger stream crossing the second time around.
